Thom Powers, Festival Director

Thom Powers has been a programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival since 2006; and he curates the subscription VOD platform SundanceNOW Doc Club. He is the co-founder and artistic director of America's largest documentary festival DOC NYC and has been described by The New York Times as a “kingmaker for documentaries.” He hosts the weekly podcast Pure Nonfiction, interviewing documentary makers; and co-hosts the weekly radio spot “Documentary of the Week” for New York's public radio station WNYC. He runs the weekly Stranger Than Fiction screening series at IFC Center since 2005; and was the founding artistic director of the Montclair Film Festival from 2012-14. Powers programs for the Miami International Film Festival, teaches at the School of Visual Arts, and was a co-founder of the Cinema Eye Honors and the Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant. He has served as a festival juror for Sundance, CPH:DOX, Doc Aviv, and It’s All True. Before working as a festival programmer, Powers spent a decade directing and producing documentaries for HBO and PBS.
