The Time Machine by Mark Kendall, School of Visual Arts – Short Documentary Winner

Women of Steel by Priyanka Prunti, New York University – Feature Documentary Runner-Up

These four films will be showcased on telegraph21 in September and directors win a grab bag of prizes from our contest sponsors.

“We received top-notch submissions from students across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Spain. With the help of our outstanding panel of judges, we selected worthy winners while celebrating the importance of providing innovative and accessible platforms for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work,” stated Steffie Kinglake, co-founder of t21.

Short documentary winner Mark Kendall added, “I am thrilled to receive this honor from one of the premier online video magazines for documentary films. Having my film featured on telegraph21 magnifies the number of viewers who will have an opportunity to see my film.”

Exploring the concept of time as a human invention, Kendall’s film, The Time Machine, tells the story of Wilfredo Alvarez, a Honduran immigrant who works in a small watch shop in Grand Central Station. As winner of the short documentary category, the film will be screened at Rooftop Films at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 2nd at the Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn.

Feature documentary winner Estephan Wagnes’ Waiting for Women looks at life in the remote Spanish village of Riofrio. Panel judge, award-winning producer and director Peter Symes, described the film as “full of deft and witty touches, beautiful little observations, and lovely juxtapositions done in the cutting room.” As winner in this category, Wagnes will receive a mentorship with an award-winning director, either Joe Berlinger in New York or Jessica Sanders in Los Angeles.

Contest judges included: Claire Aguilar (VP of Programming, ITVS/PBS), Peter Symes (Award-winning producer/director), Joe Berlinger (Award–winning filmmaker), Dan Nuxoll (Program Director, Rooftop Films), Ami Boghani (Director of Development, Mirabai Films), Joe Dorman (Award-winning director/producer), Inti Cordera (Exec.

March 10-19 Anthology Film Archives
32 Second Ave ( at 2nd St)
New York
212-505-5181
www.anthologyfilmarchives.org

Selected programs will be introduced by Tom Hurwitz, the filmmaker’s son, and by Manfred Kirchheimer, who worked with Leo Hurwitz on many of his later films. For full descriptions and details of the films, please visit: www.anthologyfilmarchives.org

An immensely important development in the history of the documentary film took place here in New York between the years 1931 and 1942. During that period, through the work of a large group of radical filmmakers, the modern documentary was born. In the hands of the members of the Workers Film and Photo League,

then Nykino, and later, Frontier Films, the social documentary grew to its first maturity. Among the members of that group of filmmakers, Leo Hurwitz stands out, both for his films and his leadership.

Along with other important documentary makers, such as Strand, Willard Van Dyke, Ralph Steiner, Sidney Meyers, and even Elia Kazan, Hurwitz pioneered the creation of a new documentary narrative form. These filmmakers – along with those they trained – prepared the way first for the television documentary and then

for the rebirth of American non-fiction filmmaking in the 1960s and 70s. Ironically, due to their left-wing politics and the Red-Scare persecutions of the 1950s, the work of these artists and their important place in film has been virtually written out of most academic histories of the documentary.

Centering on the films of Leo Hurwitz, whose work was perhaps the most influential of this group of filmmakers, our retrospective will trace the production of the New York Documentary School from its beginnings in the early 1930s, through the flourishing of the political documentary in the early 1940s. It will continue with Hurwitz’s films during the drought of the repressive 1950s, his influence on the beginnings of cinéma vérité, and his profound, masterful, and always original later work.

Organized in conjunction with Tom Hurwitz; very special thanks to Manfred Kirchheimer; Anne Morra, Mary Keene & Kitty Cleary (MoMA); and Paul Cronin. Many of the film descriptions are adapted from the Museum of Modern Art’s Circulating Film Library Catalog.

BAREFOOT TO TIMBUKTU
Opening February 12th at the Quad in New York
Directed by Martina Egi

BAREFOOT TO TIMBUKTU cleverly weaves archival and new material into a fascinating portrait of artist Ernst Aebi, an out-of-the-ordinary Swiss/American swashbuckler, one of the pioneers in the transformation of Soho and Tribeca’s factory spaces to lofts, and a social activist of a different kind.

On a trip to the Sahara in 1989, Aebi came across Araouane, a settlement in the middle of the desert, seven days by camel from Timbuktu. The once prosperous oasis was disappearing under encroaching dunes, when Aebi passed through on a caravan. So moved by the destitution, Aebi stayed three years to help the people. Under his
guidance, the village awakened to a new life: a productive vegetable garden, a school, and even a small hotel rose from the barren sands.

In the early nineties, a civil war in Mali forced Aebi to escape “his” village. He left behind a blooming oasis and a family of friends who awaited his return. Except for a few earlier unsuccessful attempts, almost twenty years passed until Aebi was finally able to return.

Through interviews with locals, loved ones and Aebi himself, we come to understand the strength, ambition and eccentrities of a man willing to walk that extra mile. On a journey between hope and doubt, “Barefoot to Timbuktu“ is a film about tolerance, conflict and friendship.
